Seminar 'New Narratives for a Damaged Planet:  Humanities and Social Sciences Perspectives on the Climate Crisis’ - report from the event

On the 16 and 17 of November, Jagiellonian University hosted Coimbra Group Social Sciences and Humanities Working Group’s seminar entitled ‘New Narratives for a Damaged Planet: Humanities and Social Sciences Perspectives on the Climate Crisis’.

The seminar consisted of the 3 keynote lectures: Anna Nacher (Jagiellonian University) presented the new media art in the times of climate disruption, Werner Scholtz (University of Southampton) discussed climate change challenges seen from the perspective of international environmental law and María Carmen Velayos Castelo (University of Salamanca) spoke about current problems and proposals on climate justice.
Besides keynotes the discussion was organized into two sessions. First covered perspectives coming from the field of art, cultural studies and anthropology: Katarzyna Wodniak from Trinity College Dublin spoke about cooperatives 2.0, Svetlana Baranova (Jagiellonian University) art as a tool to raise climate change awareness and Michał Pałasz and Jakub Wydra (Jagiellonian University) about pluriversal degrowth approach to polycrisis. The second session was dedicated to political and sociological approaches: Nikola Petrović (Institute for Social Research in Zagreb) presented on green economy and pluralization of worldviews, followed by the Núria Prat Bau and Belen Parra Ramajo (Universitat de Barcelona) discussing social work and environmental injustice.
 
The seminar was accompanied by the meeting of WG SSH and was organized by dr Natasza Styczyńska, the WG’s vice-chair in cooperation with the Institute of European Studies and the office of the JU Vice-rector for International Relations.
