(Non)Commemoration of Heritage in Central and Eastern Europe – Report from the Student and PhD Candidate Conference

(Non)Commemoration of Heritage in Central and Eastern Europe – Report from the Student and PhD Candidate Conference

On Friday, 12 January, students and PhD candidates of the Institute of European Studies of the Jagiellonian University gathered for an international conference on ‘heritage’, broadly understood. Co-organised by the European Studies Circle of the Jagiellonian University, this event was part of a broader project led by prof. Kinga by Anna Gajda entitled "The (non)commemoration of Heritage of Eastern Europe."

The conference, organised in a hybrid format, was attended by students and PhD candidates of the Jagiellonian University in Poland, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China, the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest Romania, as well as the Krakow Youth Association of Friends of the Sciences and Arts at the Henryk Jordan Youth Centre in Krakow, which is under the patronage of the Jagiellonian University.

We heard several interesting presentations in which the participants examined different aspects of heritage - from the use of national heritage issues in the rhetoric of far-right populists, through culinary heritage and its protection in EU legal regulations, and to the problematic heritage of zoos. The presentations will be published in the form of an English-language, peer-reviewed publication.

The conference and the associated project are made possible through the support of funds from the Strategic Excellence Initiative Program at the Faculty of International and Political Studies at Jagiellonian University.
