The successful candidates will contribute to the research project REDIRECT.

Institute of European Studies of the Faculty of International and Political Studies at the Jagiellonian University invites applications for part-time (10%) research assistance position to begin in January 2024 and lasting for 12 months. The position requires residing in Kraków.
 
The successful candidates will contribute to the research project REDIRECT. The REpresentative DIsconnect: diagnosis and strategies for RECTification funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. 
The focus of REDIRECT is to study the current transformation of democratic polities in Europe, to realise whether and how their centres of gravity are shifting, and to improve our understanding of the “representative disconnect” – a multidimensional phenomenon of regression of the demos-kratos linkage involving institutional, behavioral and affective components. REDIRECT moves from the idea to study representative democracy in a comprehensive manner, connecting several relevant dimensions of analysis, in order to extract sustainable ideas and viable instruments to cope with the current problems of “democracy in flux”. These, in turn, will allow a parsimonious formulation of remedies, to be activated both at the institutional level (i.e. assuring a future to crucial “mediating bodies” of representatives democracy like parties, leaders, parliamentary institutions), and at the level of civil society.
 
As a research assistant in the project, the Candidate will be expected to perform duties such as such as the collection and compilation of data on the functioning of the democratic system of the European Union (in cooperation with the project leader and the responsible researcher); support in preparing research reports (in English); support in preparing project publications and articles for high-impact journals; managing empirical databases; contributing to project coordination and management; communicating with local and international project participants.

We expect candidates to have:

  • at least a Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Political Science, International Relations, European Studies or other related fields of knowledge in social research methodology and experience in social research, documented e.g. in the study path and activities ancillary to the study path (e.g. participation in research projects, activities of the Study Circle, etc.), especially experience in preparing and conducting focus group interviews and/or individual interviews;
  • ability to use analytical tools (e.g. MAXQDA);
  • interest in issues of democracy and the functioning of the system of the EU;
  • very good knowledge of Polish and English, spoken and written;
  • reliability, regularity, dutifulness, ability to work in a team.

Required application documents:

  • • 1-page motivation letter,
    • Resume including information on the candidate’s scientific, teaching and organisational achievements,
    • personal questionnaire filled in by the candidate,
    • copy of the master’s diploma,
    • declaration of the candidate, confirming that the Jagiellonian University will be their primary place of work, should they be selected in the selection procedure,
    • statement under Article 113 of the Law on higher education and science,
    • statement on acknowledging and accepting the rules and regulations concerning intellectual property management and commercialisation in force at the Jagiellonian University.
    • two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the candidate's academic achievements,
    • copies of certificates of level of knowledge of English (excluding persons for whom English is their mother tongue or if the language of instruction during their academic education was English - please send a copy of your diploma indicating the language of instruction). Please attach the results of any other relevant language proficiency tests to your application.
