Report from the workshop "Mediation as an inclusive and sustainable method of resolving conflicts", 23 April 2024

Report from the workshop "Mediation as an inclusive and sustainable method of resolving conflicts", 23 April 2024

Yesterday, students and employees of the Institute of European Studies of the Jagiellonian University had the opportunity to participate in an international workshop aimed at presenting the topic of mediation as an alternative method of resolving disputes in an international perspective.

As the speakers emphasised, it not simply a matter of different legal systems themselves, but a broader ecosystem of legal and cultural norms that determine the success of this methodology.

Some countries may be culturally conflict-adverse and have a local tradition of negotiation, whereas in other countries relatively few companies have corporate mediation policies and the rates of seeking mediation may be still quite low.  The international and cross-cultural nature of the workshop helped to demonstrate these important differences.

Our guests were lawyer-mediators from Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, and Switzerland, who presented the legal solutions in the field of mediation in these countries:

  • Małgorzata Skawińska - PhD in law, Attorney-at-law, Mediator, Poland, Worldwide Independent Lawyers League
  • Yue-En Chong - Managing Director at Bethel Chambers LLC, Singapore, Worldwide Independent Lawyers League
  • Isidoro Barbagallo - PhD in law, Attorney-at-law, Italy, Worldwide Independent Lawyers League
  • Peter Ruggle - Lic.iur. HSG, Attorney-at-law, RUGGLE PARTNER Rechtsanwalt und Mediatoren, Switzerland, Worldwide Independent Lawyers League
  • Coen Vleesenbeek - Mediator specialised in Franchise & SME mediation, the Netherlands
  • Robert Oosthout - Attorney at Law, The Netherlands, Worldwide Independent Lawyers League

The workshop was carried out as part of the Strategic Programme Excellence Initiative at the Jagiellonian University.
