Call for applications - Remembrance Podcasts: Persecution of queer people under National Socialism

For decades, queer people were marginalised from the commemoration of those persecuted by National Socialism. Queer activist groups have been instrumental in ensuring that queer experiences and stories now have a place in the culture of remembrance. Nevertheless, there is still much to be understood about their persecution and its consequences since 1945. We are looking for students from Germany and Poland who would like to explore this topic from different perspectives.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft e.V. and the GFPS-Polska are inviting ten students from Germany and Poland to take part in the project: Remembrance Podcasts: Persecution of queer people under National Socialism.

At three online meetings and a five-day long summer school at the Sachsenhausen memorial site near Berlin the participants will address the themes of the lives of queer people before and in National Socialism, their incarceration in concentration camps, and the effects of this on queer life after 1945.

The project will revolve around podcasts, which the participants will develop and produce in Polish-German pairs. This way the students will have the opportunity to make an active contribution to the culture of remembrance and can focus on the content that interests them.

The summer school is looking for humanities and social science students enrolled in Poland and Germany, who want to focus on this topic as part of their studies. Prior knowledge of the project’s themes would be advantageous, but is no prerequisite to participation.

The working language and the language that the podcasts will be recorded in is English.

The project consists of:

  • Three online meetings: Meet & Greet, introduction to topic contents and to production of podcasts
  • Five-day summer school at the Sachsenhausen memorial site by Berlin: a guided tour of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, an excursion to Berlin, lectures and debates, all alongside time for podcast research and production (preliminary programme).

To ensure the project’s success, participation in all programme events is compulsory.

Dates:

  • Online seminar: 15th July 2024: 16:00 – 18:00
  • Online seminar: 29th July 2024: 16:00 – 18:00
  • Online seminar: 19th August 2024: 16:00 – 18:00
  • Summer School: 26th – 30th August 2024

Participation is cost free. Travel, accommodation (Shared rooms Sachsenhausen youth hostel), catering and the programme costs will be covered.

The application deadline is 9th June 2024.
