Programme: Erasmus+, under the action of Strategic Partnerships for higher education / Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices

Topic: Cultural heritage / European Year of Cultural Heritage / EU citizenship / EU awareness and democracy/ New innovative programs / educational methods / development of training courses

CONTEXT: The project is aimed at 1st and 2nd level students as well as academic lecturers. It concerns shaping and transferring the cultural heritage of Europe, its multicultural image, transnational character, which are the basis for shaping the sense of social and cultural unity of Europeans and for strengthening European identity and active citizenship; the presence of a European cultural heritage in selected partner cities. The city is understood as a tool for finding a cultural community between the national heritage of partner countries and the cultural heritage of Europe. This is particularly important in the period of intensified migration and the phenomenon of cultural transformation, where the boundaries of national cultures are blurred and create multiple identities. It is equally important for native Europeans to understand the cultural community of nations and minority and majority societies that make up Europe. This approach to cultural heritage equips young people with new civic competences, expected in the labor market in a multicultural society. The project strengthens the internationalization of partner universities, supports the professional development of lecturers, implements the principles of the Bologna system and the modernization agenda of higher education. Introduces modern teaching methods and a modular learning (blended learning) program based on stationary classes and e-tutorials.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

  1. Strengthening and expanding international cooperation of partner universities, including the newly created unit in the Institute of European Studies of the JU (Department of Mediterranean Politics and Culture)
  2. Improving the quality of teaching, through the use and implementation in partner institutions, digital technologies and on-line teaching
  3. Adaptation of the program offer to the needs of students and labor market requirements, including work in an intercultural environment
  4. Building awareness of cultural unity based on common cultural heritage of Europe (on the example of selected cities)
  5. Strengthening the scientific position of project participants by enabling them to develop professional, international research, scientific and publishing activities
  6. Facilitation of access to the developed project results by open access rule

TARGET GROUPS: BA and MA students at partner institutions, lecturers participating in the project; students and lecturers from outside the partnership; local authorities, policy makers, representatives of science and education.

PROJECT RESULTS:

an international curriculum of the modular course (curriculum) /  e-lectures as a component of the full-time course (20 e-lecture units in each partner institution) / a common curriculum for personalized e-tutorials / a summer school program /  an international student textbook, in English (printed 600 copies for dissemination in libraries, conferences, meetings with decision-makers, etc.) and in translation into partner languages (published in electronic version or available on-line) / the international bibliographic list of literature for the implementation of the module / a jointly developed student assessment tool / 3 conferences ending the project and promoting its results (1 in each partner institution)

Dissemination: Project results will be available on university platforms / websites or on YouTube channel / social networks. The results will also be disseminated during conferences ending the project and as part of the own activities of partner institutions (conferences, publications, lectures, etc.

Added value: a synergy between higher education and school education. Based on the results achieved in the project, an in-service training course for teachers in the EU will be developed after the end of the project. The course announcement and the recruitment of teachers will be conducted through the EPALE platform and the European School Gateway.

The Post-Crisis Legitimacy of the European Union (PLATO) is a European Training Network funded under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions. The aim of this Horizon 2020 funding scheme is to train a new generation of creative and innovative researchers by bringing together universities, research centres and non-academic partners from different countries.

Multiple crises have created new legitimacy challenges for the EU. To investigate whether the EU’s responses to these crises have been legitimate with a set of crucial actors and standards, PLATO will recruit 15 PhD students to form an integrated research training network.

They will follow an intensive and demanding training programme through several PhD schools organised at network level. The students will get solid academic training by a multidisciplinary faculty of leading scholars, and complementary training in a range of other professional skills through more practically oriented courses and work experience from relevant sectors.

Transnational and cross-sectoral mobility will be a key aspect of the network. The early-stage researchers will spend parts of their PhD at another partner university and undertake an internship at a non-academic partner to gain first-hand experience from the policy-advice, consulting or civil society sectors. PLATO’s group of non-academic partners include several leading European think tanks, a consulting firm for trade associations, two civil society organisations, and the leading online daily news site on EU politics, EUobserver. Moreover, the career development organisation Vitae will assist the PhDs in their individual career planning.

PLATO has been granted 3.9 million euros over a period of four years.
