Institute of European Studies at Jagiellonian University offers 1 doctoral position within MSCA Doctoral Network IDEoPOP. Funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN), IDEoPOP explores how populism intersects with both domestic and international politics and how it impacts international politics. Under the guidance of some of the leading scholars in this area, a new generation of doctoral students will be trained in the study of the international dimensions and effects of populism.
DEoPOP offers training-through-research within a uniquely structured doctoral programme imparting academic and complementary professional skills. A multifaceted scholarly training is provided jointly by seven academic partners, where PhD students are employed: University of Freiburg (Germany), Sciences Po Paris (France), University of Gothenburg (Sweden), Bilkent University (Turkey), University of Genoa (Italy), Jagiellonian University (Poland), and University of Bath (UK). Moreover, doctoral candidates will learn how to develop and communicate academic and policy-relevant solutions to the challenges posed by populism in international politics via temporary assignments to renowned think tanks. The comprehensive training in IDEoPOP will prepare doctoral candidates for careers in academia, think tanks, government agencies, international organizations, or NGOs dealing with issues of democracy and international cooperation.
The position offered at Jagiellonian University is part of Work Package 4, the expected topic fitting into Populist storytelling, ontological insecurity, and the infrastructures of global governance (within WP4: Populist Communication about World Politics: Using the International for Domestic Mobilization). The dissertation will examine populist storytelling about the “international” and how it informs the understanding and explanation of continuity and change in the global order. The investigation will explore the role played by ontological insecurity in narrating projects, alternatives, and fantasies about global governance. The focus will be on how anxiety, fear, and uncertainty produce populist discursive infrastructures that sustain specific social imaginaries of global affairs and their governance. While the project may undertake a parallel assessment of cases from Central and Eastern Europe, the Western Balkans, Central Asia, and the Caucasus, it would be beneficial to demonstrate how these developments are simultaneously distinct and similar across Western and non-Western contexts.
